Love this spot. Had wanted to come here for ever because we drive and walk past it all the time. One late evening we made the decision and walked in up the elevators and into a busy night (I am sure they all are). Beautiful people, beautiful drinks, nice wine list - could not go wrong. And the n the views! You have to see it
My hubby and I visited the rooftop bar at the Hotel Shangri La when we were guests at the hotel for a night back in May 2016. We loved the fantastic view of the Santa Monica pier and beach from the outdoor area of the rooftop bar. We could see a ways away, even on a cloudy/foggy day. We loved the drinks we ordered as we sat in their comfy lounge area. It wasn't too crowded on a Wednesday night, thankfully! We really loved the experience. My only qualm is that they didn't offer much in the way of food, so we ended up dining at the restaurant on the ground floor of the Shangri La. Overall, we really enjoyed our experience at the rooftop bar. And several of my friends and family members who haven't even stayed at the hotel have visited just for the rooftop bar experience. Pretty excellent!
Perfect date place. Period. This says a lot coming from a person who has been on a lot of dates! The bar opens at 4pm and you have to get there right on time in order to get great seats outside. There is one table with two chairs that is sandwiched between two heat warmers. It isn't by any other tables and it's quite the romantic spot. These seats are in perfect view of the ocean and are perfect for watching the sunset. Luckily, my date was there right when it opened and he reserved the table for us. The view was absolutely gorgeous and we watched the sunset while sipping on some cocktails. The only thing that killed the mood was the fact that all the other people who didn't get there on time were standing right in front of us taking selfies and enjoying the view as well. It'd be nice if it wasn't so crowded, but with a view like that, of course it's going to attract a lot of people! Given we came here in the middle of winter, It's freezing when you're up on the rooftop. The two heaters sandwiching us were almost as good as nothing, as the wind was blowing the heat away from us. I was so cold it felt like my nose was gonna fall off. The chill factor makes it great for snuggling up close to someone, if you know what I mean ;P (told you it was the perfect date place!). We ended up going inside afterwards and chose the seats that were next to a fireplace. There are also other seats outside that are enclosed by transparent walls that allow you to see the view as well. These seats allow for a larger party, definitely not intimate, but perfect for groups. Check this place out! The view is breathtaking!
Suite 700 was in fact an actual suite at the historical Shangri-La Hotel on Santa Monica beach. It was later turned into a roof top bar with sweeping views of the beach as well as gorgeous sunsets. Everything about this place screams old Hollywood. A couple of small historical tit bits about this Art-Deco space: Hotel was originally built in 1939 and in recent years underwent a multi-million dollar renovation, very specific structural items remained the same, which gives this place a very nostalgic feel. Madonna used to live here and Sean Penn would sneak in through the back door. Suite 700 is not a large bar, but there is plenty of seating on the outdoor roof-top deck. A portion of the deck is enclosed in glass to protect you from chilly evening winds. The inside glows at night from dim lighting and candles. Music is not too loud so you can still enjoy conversations. Suite 700 menu offers a nice variety of small plates with a few full fare items. My recommendations would include: Hamachi Crudo, Smoked Chicken Empanadas and Cheese Plate. House Cocktails, although hand crafted and creative, lacked flavor or more accurately - good flavor. I tried a few and just wasn't into them. But don't fret, the bartender is very skilled at making your any old favorite. Happy Hour pricies during the week are awesome! Even if you do not come here for the cocktails, you have to come for the view!
Review is long over due but I had a fabulous joint birthday party here with hottie Amy C and around 25 of our friends. I really didn't know what to expect since I didn't get a chance to visit the rooftop bar before the event but I really couldn't ask for more in a venue: - an outdoor heated patio plus an indoor lounge/bar with a fireplace - panoramic view of the ocean and the pier - friendly and fast bartenders - friendly bouncers - dinner/bar menu - awesome event manager (ask for Jess Park if you're planning an event) - dj, who refused to play Lady Gaga... - no cover but do expect to wait in line if you get there around 10pm on a Saturday (5-10 min wait) - the venue isn't that big but we booked early so there was plenty of seating for all our guests This is such an ideal spot to get together with friends, a date or those visiting from out of town. I had a very memorable birthday with great drinks, delicious Enjoy cupcakes, close friends and family and many lovely photos by Kwiri to prove it! ;) I heart you all for making it such a special day!
OMG! Ninja waited in line to get in somewhere NAGL SMH =( The friends we came to meet were already inside and the lounge was at capacity so we had to wait a bit before we could get in. But there's no cover and we didn't have to wait too long so it was okay. View is amazing, nice intimate glow within, drinks are decent, bar is fast, and bartenders are nice eye candy as well as most of the people that came that night. Good times and new friends...just what I was looking for in my first night out down here. =)
